The adorable Duggals!

Saw “Do dooni char” this weekend- a charming comedy about a lower middle class Punjabi family starring the real life duo - “Rishi Kapoor” and “Neetu Singh”. Mr. Duggal (Rishi) plays a maths teacher who barely makes enough money to cover the expenses of his demanding kids who are embarrassed of their family’s modest lifestyle; the daughter even refuses to take a lift on her father’s trusty scooter. When Mr Duggal finally resolves to buy a car, there is genuine excitement at home, but he can’t seem to come up with the down payment. The movie touches a chord somewhere because it is so relatable. A must watch especially for the fans of the “Kapoor couple”; they are truly lovable.

This is slowly becoming a trend this year. Big budget movies with the “In” starcast are proving to be box office bummers (Dabaang being the sole exception) and the low budget movies with a low profile star cast are coming out as the surprise winners. As a classic example of the stark difference, I also watched “Aisha” this weekend. The movie is all style and glamour but lacks soul. Jane Austen will definitely turn in her grave (For the uninitiated, Aisha is an adoption of “Emma” - the classic written by Jane Austen). The entire movie revolves around parties and who should be/ should not be marrying whom – such a waste of a movie! The only thing likeable about it was the delectable Abhay Deol (poor guy - must have been cursing himself for doing the film!). And yeah, not to forget the superb styling of the entire star cast, especially Sonam Kapoor. It was classy and refreshingly different.

But is the super elite class really like that?? Is life for them just one party after another and do their most crucial decisions revolve around what to wear and whom to marry?? Even if that's the case, do we need to actually make such movies? What a waste of resources! Its high time the film industry starts giving more attention to the script of the movie then the style. Special attention to The Karan Johars and Siddharth Anands of the world. The makers of Peepli live, Udaan, Do dooni char and Tere bin laden – take a bow!
